When I wrote the post about Honoring Yourself, it was because I’d received so much support and thanks during July. It felt so good, but I wanted to remind everyone that it’s still your choice to heal and do the difficult work. The daunting task of shedding the shackles of old ways of thinking and old ways of thought that frequently imprison survivors of sexual assault.
However, July was a fairly tense time for me. To be blamed for others’s abuse, kidnapping, and even murder was horrific. Even if I knew the attacks were ludicrous— from a very unreliable source—it still hurt. I’m probably too sensitive, but well, if I am, I’ll deal with the fact that being sensitive is a quality that helps me be a better human being most of the time.
To thank you for all the support, especially in July, I put together this slide show. I picked some of the comments and feedback I received during July. Then, I spontaneously1 spoke into the computer mic as I looked at the comments. I gave a little background and told a bit about each comment.
My eyes brimmed with joy.
I thought of a viral video series in the early 2000s. It was a series of videos of an average guy named “Matt.” Matt went around the world and simply started dancing.2 Soon, hundreds of people started dancing with him. He filmed it, and watching these videos brings me such joy! Matt’s not some big professional dancer. He is just a guy showing our similarities regardless of what culture or walk of life we come from. In many ways, Matt’s simple videos show how we are all connected. Like, the single word, “Paperdolls.”
And, oh my…my “Mormon” background comes shining forth! I liken this and liken that and eventually I got rid of the sing-song pattern! I’m planning to do more of these, and I might have to write a script to follow. This spontaneous chatter isn’t the most professional voice work—but it’s sincere. And, that’s all I wanted for this one.
In many ways, watching Matt dance reminded me of when I was a little kid and danced to “The Baby Elephant Walk” by Henry Mancini
