Two moments of wonder
And a positive affirmation to start my day.
All Together Now:
On the second day of Christmas1
my true self gave to me:
Two moments of wonder
And a positive affirmation to start my day.
Directions (no batteries required):
Notice the simple. Pause. Really look at it. In Paperdolls & Cowboy Boots, I write about the struggle I experienced after Karen Fisher died. I went as deep and as dark as I've been as an adult. There were a few things that helped me get out of that despair, one of the key practices I started doing was pausing and noticing, really noticing the beauty of simple things and events. For example, when I held an orange, I looked at the color, before I even started to peel it. As I peeled the orange, I breathed in the smell.
The process of peeling an orange and focusing on its splendor builds resources of gratitude and appreciation in my heart.2
Years later, I found a book entitled, "Hardwiring Happiness" by Rick Hanson.3 This book explains the neuroscience for this habit I accidentally discovered years before.
Let your true self give to you: two simple moments today. I try to absorb two moments of splendor each day. Remember, it's not an extraordinary moment. It's noticing the extraordinary in the ordinary.
I understand not all celebrate Christmas, or even believe in God. However, for the sake of simple communication, I ask for your understanding of my play on a well known Christmas Carol to give you 12 days of humorous prompts to support you through this holiday season.
