The day that Paperdolls was first published in April of 1992, I walked up to "The Waking Owl" bookstore and bought a copy of Paperdolls: Healing from Sexual Abuse in Mormon Neighborhoods. I walked home, and put it on my bookshelf.
This was a very symbolic act for me. The book, and the sexual abuse of my childhood was still part of my life. But, it was on the shelf. Not front and center.
I'm so much more than just a sexual abuse survivor.
During the last two weeks, I’ve taken some time to reflect and I’ve had some in depth discussions with Laurel and other significant support people in my life. I have decided I'm going to start sharing more of myself. Specifically, what I've developed and learned in the last decades. There are a couple of areas I'm considered an expert. I'm also going to share what brings me joy.
The intent is not to boast, or encourage you to do anything I’ve done. The intent is to show you, my beloved survivors, that you can do anything you want.
I have a very funny story about the phrase, "You can do anything you want."
Shortly after my family meeting in 1990, Karen Fisher1 was diagnosed with colon cancer. She had surgery, and I visited her at the hospital. She told me that a young intern came in to help her "bond" with her colonoscopy bag.
Karen was cheerful and her spirits high. She had a great sense of humor and I couldn't help but laugh imagining this young, college intern talking to Karen about bonding with her colonoscopy bag.
The young intern enthusiastically said, "You'll be able to do anything you've ever wanted to do now!”
With her typical dry wit, Karen said to the young intern, "Oh wonderful, I can finally get the balance beam installed in my basement. I've always wanted to do the balance beam."
The young intern looked confused, then when Karen sensed the young intern was slightly embarrassed. Karen assured her by putting her hand on the young intern's hand then said, "I'm okay with the bag. Don't worry about a thing. You've done a nice job explaining it to me."
So, you might not be able to do anything you want, but I'd like you to be very open to the things you can do. You really might be surprised. I know I was. After healing and not trying to suppress all the toxic waste running rampant in my heart, I was free. I had so much more energy and it seemed like I had more access to more parts of my mind.2
In the coming days, I'll share with you more extensive details about the upgrades and descriptions of the the content that will be available. Paid subscribers will get everything. I'll include instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe to specific areas.
Here is a graphic depicting the upgrades and enhancements:
I'm pretty excited about this. It will be fun to share with you and hopefully will inspire you to do "whatever you want."3

Within reason! But, you might be pleasantly surprised you can do much more than you’ve ever imagined.
