Kacie Rene Woody: October 17, 1989 – December 4, 2002

The title of the book, Paperdolls, is intentionally misspelled. The misspelling represents that we are all connected. My favorite computer system is a Linux distribution called Ubuntu. I particularly like it because of what Ubuntu means:

“Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu” or “I am, because you are” is how we describe the meaning of Ubuntu. It speaks to the fact that we are all connected, and that one can only grow and progress through the growth and progression of others.

Twenty-One years ago today, one of my perpetrators from my childhood, abducted, raped, and murdered young Kacie Woody from Greenbrier, Arkansas. The story of Kacie’s end rocked Arkansas, much like the abduction of Elizabeth Smart rocked Utah. Interestingly, Kacie’s death happened during the time Elizabeth Smart endured her 9-month hell.
