Writing about sexual assault, even with healing and hope as the premise, is a heavy subject. It needs to be discussed and brought to light. And, I am deeply committed to offering support and encouragement to my beloved survivors. However, I must practice what I preach and "not gaze into the abyss"( Nietzsche) too long. Hence the launch of this separate newsletter, "Puppy Love."
I'm writing this new list from the perspective of my dogs: Olaf an alpha Yorkie, and Henry, my gentle giant. Henry is a 90 pound Karelian Bear Dog1. He’s still a puppy, and is intimidated by Olaf. Which in and of itself, is hilarious.
These missives are meant to be funny with an occasional insight or touching moment. Think of Snoopy, Calvin & Hobbs, or even the fun Bluey.
I believe that this new list called “Puppy Love” automatically has all the subscribers to Paperdolls & Cowboy Boots (URL: www.paperdolls.today). I know that there are some who are afraid of dogs or other small animals. Or just aren’t in the mood for the comic relief. You can remain on my main substack site, and remove yourself from this lighthearted list.2
You don’t have to have a dog, or a pet to enjoy this list. And, if you don’t want these particular missives, I understand. But, please try to find some simple joy in your day. I intentionally seek simple joy every day. I listen to the birds feeding on my bird feeders, watch fluffy clouds cover the sun, and gaze at the trees swaying in the breeze. In the words of e.e. cummings:
"i thank You God for most this amazing day.....for everything which is natural which is infinite which is yes"3
Haven’t heard of a KBG (Karelian Bear Dog)? Well, stay tuned. Briefly, Henry, my gentle giant, flunked out of bear school. He’d rather chase butterflies than bears. I don’t blame him.

I’m pretty sure that Olaf and Henry won’t be quoting poetry to you. But, you never know.
